Requests for Production of Documents and Things

In most cases, you will usually only be asked to produce documents. However, "things" are fair game as well. For example, in one case, I requested that the husband produce an 18-wheel tractor / trailer rig at my office.

Examples of documents you may be requested to produce are:

  • Documents supporting certain contentions. For example, claims for a disproportionate share of the estate or for alimony.
  • Video recordings, photographs or tape recordings.
  • E-mails, faxes or other electronic communications exchanged with other people during a specified time.
  • Cell phone bills and records for a specified time.
  • Credit card statements.
  • Bank statements, canceled checks, deposit slips, electronic transfer records.
  • Your contract with your attorney.
  • Diaries, notes or memos.
  • Your calendar or day planner.
  • Income tax returns and supporting documents.
  • Pay check stubs, Leave and Earning Statements (LESs).
  • Books of financial accounts, if you are self-employed.
  • Statements from investment or brokerage accounts.
  • Closing packets for real estate transactions, including notes, deeds of trust, warranty deeds and contracts for sale of land.
  • Certificates of title for all automobiles boats or other vehicles.
  • Insurance policies.
  • All credit card applications or loan applications for a certain period of time.
  • Your credit report.
  • Financial statements.
